186 Frequently Asked Questions

What is the 186 Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) visa?

The subclass 186 ENS is a permanent residency visa for skilled workers nominated by an approved Australian employer. It has two streams: Direct Entry and Temporary Residence Transition (TRT).

What is the difference between Direct Entry and TRT?

Direct Entry is for skilled workers who have not necessarily held a 482 visa but meet skills, qualification and experience requirements. Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) is for people who have worked for their sponsoring employer on a 482 visa and are transitioning to PR.

How long do I need to work on a 482 before applying for 186 via TRT?

Under the TRT stream you generally need to have worked full-time for your sponsoring employer in the nominated occupation for 2 years. This period is now portable across approved sponsors, so changing employers does not reset the clock.

What is the age limit for the 186 visa?

Applicants generally need to be under 45 at the time of application, though certain exemptions may apply depending on your circumstances and occupation. We assess whether any exemption applies to you.

Do I need a skills assessment for the 186?

It depends on your stream and occupation. Direct Entry applicants generally require a positive skills assessment; some TRT applicants may be exempt. We advise you on your specific situation.

What are the English requirements for the 186?

Applicants generally need to demonstrate competent English, though some occupations and passport holders may be exempt. We confirm the exact requirement for your case.

Can my family be included on the 186 visa?

Yes. Your spouse or de facto partner and dependent children can be included and, once granted, gain permanent residency alongside you.
