186 Visa: TRT vs Direct Entry — Which Stream is Right for You? (2026 Guide)

The Subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) visa is one of the most popular pathways to Australian permanent residency for skilled workers. Unlike points-tested visas, the 186 requires an Australian employer to sponsor you — but in return, it gives you the right to live and work in Australia permanently. There are two streams, and choosing the right one makes a significant difference to your eligibility and timeline. Stream A: Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) The TRT stream is designed for workers who are already in Australia on a Subclass 482 (Skills in Demand) visa and want to transition to permanent residence with their sponsoring employer. Key requirements:

You must currently hold, or have held within the past 2 years, a Subclass 482 visa You must have worked for your sponsoring employer (or an associated entity) for at least 2 years full-time in the 3 years before the nomination is lodged Your nominated occupation must match your 482 occupation You must be under 45 years old at the time of application (exemptions apply in some circumstances) No skills assessment required under this stream No Labour Market Testing required English: IELTS 6.0 overall, no band below 6.0 (or equivalent) Current processing time: approximately 8–20 months

Stream B: Direct Entry (DE) The DE stream is for skilled workers who have not previously held a 482 visa, or who have not worked for their sponsoring employer long enough to qualify under TRT. Key requirements:

At least 3 years of relevant full-time work experience in the nominated occupation A positive skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority (mandatory) Nominated occupation must appear on the relevant occupation list You must be under 45 years old (exemptions apply) Labour Market Testing is not compulsory, but advertising the position is strongly recommended to demonstrate genuine need English: IELTS 6.0 overall, no band below 6.0 (or equivalent) Current processing time: approximately 8–20 months

Be an approved standard business sponsor Demonstrate the position is genuine and there is an ongoing need for the role Show financial capacity to pay the nominated salary Pay the nominee at least the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) or the market salary rate — whichever is higher
